Salta, Argentina — Utah with Alcohol

Imagine the canyon country of southern Utah dotted with world-class wineries and Spanish Colonial architecture.P1010457P1010541That would be the province of Salta in the far NW corner of Argentina, at the foot of the Andes Mountains near the border with Bolivia and Chile. High desert plateaus, canyons, gorges, cactus and, oh yes, vineyards stretching to the horizon. Plus charming towns with Spanish style plazas and churches mixed with spectacular views of multi-colored rock in various shades of red, orange, black, white, and green. And a surreal salt flat straight out of a sci-fi movie directed by Frederico Fellini.P1010497 P1010489 P1010777 P1010771 P1010769 P1010761 P1010749 P1010739 P1010734 P1010733 P1010728 P1010723 P1010684 P1010681

I’ve just returned from 4 days in Salta Province plus a day in the neighboring and even more remote Jujuy Province, courtesy of the Argentinian-based tour operators Socampa Adventure Travel and Say Hueque. I’m not sure what I enjoyed more – the scenery or the wine tastings. Fortunately I didn’t have to choose. There was plenty of both. Plus the best empanadas I’ve ever had. I’ll tell you more in my upcoming article, due out in February. In the meantime enjoy the photos.P1010824 P1010823 P1010809 P1010794 P1010791 P1010688 P1010625 P1010609 P1010568 P1010562 P1010553 P1010535 P1010534 P1010494 P1010489 P1010488 P1010484 P1010476 P1010452
